Overall, all five citiessaw an upward trend inthe use of public transport, a pattern mirrored bya corresponding decline inthe reliance on private cars.Among them, Perthregistered the most pronounced transformation.

Interestingly, Sydeny and Adelaidewitnessed a complete reversal in their rankings regardingthe use of the two transpord modes.Aftergrowing graduallyfrom 40% to 47% between 2000 and 2005, the percentage of public transport users in Sydney dipped slightly by 2% in 2007,beforebouncing back to50% by 2010.Similarly, Adelaide’s public transport usagejumpedfrom 20% to 38%,althoughit stillrecorded the lowest proportionamong the five cities.However, private car usage in both citiesfell considerablyto 25% and 45% by 2010.

Perthalsorecorded a dramatic risein public transport use,overtakingMelbourne’s figure in late 2003 andreaching46% by 2010.This contributed toa noticeable dropin its private car usage from 50% in 2000 to just 31% a decade later.
